A Little Unpredictability

BIBLICAL POINT OF REFERENCE:

"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God."

~2 Peter 1:20-21

Life would be great if it was like a movie.

Picture the optimistic music in the background as the opening scene begins, and the as the story unfolds, everything seems to fall into place for all the main characters.

Yeah, life would be great if it was like a movie like that. I can imagine everything falling into place for myself, but that it typically far from the truth. Things are actually never as they seem. As much as I consider myself a predictable person, there is nothing predictable about my life.

God is kind of like that too. We know He’s there, and we know He has a plan, but rarely does that plan fit into anything we might imagine or even consider. And just like the situations that we face in our lives, His plan is seriously unpredictable and unknowable.

How annoying.

I started a new job today, and I have to admit—it’s not what I expected. I was ready to waltz into that office and do my job fantastically…on the first day…because that’s totally possible….But it wasn’t like that at all. I was overwhelmed at all the new information coming my way, confused about the terms and projects used and talked about in meetings, and overly nervous that I wasn’t going to be able to do my job well.

I know it was only the first day, but cut me some slack, ladies. Everyone gets nervous on their first day, especially if the job is more permanent than it’s ever been before.

How annoying.

And humbling.

I may not like when things don’t go how I thought they would, but God wouldn’t exist if I could choose how every situation in my life played out. If life was predictable, we wouldn’t have much fun, and we wouldn’t see much growth in ourselves. We have to look back on the unpredictability of our lives and notice exactly how much we have grown because we had no idea what we were doing. It’s an interesting logic, but God knows what He’s doing. I don’t. So why shouldn’t I let go and let God take the reigns?

Life is unpredictable. How annoying, right? Maybe so—or maybe it’s alright, because maybe we all need a little unpredictability in our lives. Maybe we need to approach each day and dive in fully trusting God to help us grow.
