Flirt with God

“A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

~Ecclesiastes 3:4

Okay, this might sound really strange. Kind of inappropriate, right? I mean, flirt with God? Seriously? Hold it and just give me a chance to explain! I promise, I'm not trying to be blasphemous or make things weird. I'm trying to relate everyday things to God. Let's just take a step back and look at the definition of flirting. According to Google (oh yeah, I used Google), "flirting" is to:

Behave as though attracted to or trying to attract someone, but for amusement rather than with serious intentions.

Alright, now when I say flirt, I mean behave as though attracted to or trying to attract God. Of course, not in a sexual way! Get your mind out of the gutter, please. Just take a moment to think about it. God loves us immensely; we know that by the way He clearly died for us! Yep--we can boldly say that this loving God is certainly attracted to us. His desire for us and our love is out of this world (literally). With this knowledge, why not look at the Lord, knowing that He is attracted to us. In a pure, spiritual love, He finds us extremely attractive.

Ok, now the other part of the definition: "for amusement rather than with serious intentions." This might sound odd. With God, shouldn't all things be serious? You know, the way that we have our hands folded, our faces stoic, and our voices monotone as we pray the rosary. Sure, there is a time for seriousness, as the Bible states, but let’s not forget that there is also a time for fun! Amusement! God loves to laugh with us. He wants to have fun with us. And when we really look, we find that so many things amuse Him. The best part is that we get to share in His amusement.

Just think of that moment when you're walking through the parking lot and you trip and fall. No one sees it, thankfully! But wait! God saw it. That's a moment you can share with Him. Laugh with Him, smile at Him.

Another thing: Tell Him your thoughts. Not just the serious thoughts - all of them. Tell Him about that cute boy you talked to today. Tell Him how you were super clumsy during work (telling Him can really brush off some of the embarrassment). Give Him a quick thank you when you taste that chocolate ice cream that makes your tongue burst with pleasure. After all, it’s a taste of what Heaven will be like with Him. Acknowledge Him when your favorite song comes on. Share your joy with Him, cause He's longing for it! Tell Him what you find funny, what you find awkward, and even that bizarre dream you had last night.

Joke with Him, even. You know that thing/story/video that you find absolutely hilarious and no one seems to share in your amusement. Maybe you try telling a joke and no one gets it, or they just think it’s really lame. Maybe your puns are pathetic. Take notice of God! He’s the author of humor, and therefore wants to share in all things that you find funny.

Are you starting to get it? When I say flirt with God, I'm not trying to get us thinking "dirty". We are physical beings, so we usually only see these types of things (flirting, in this case) in a physical way. Let's remember that God is outside of time and space. Our soul is different than our body. Let our souls flirt with God. You know you're attracted to Him, because He's the Almighty King of the Universe! You know He's attracted to you, because He made you in His image and suffered all things to the point of death for your sake.

Go ahead then. Flirt with God.

Your Laughing Sister,

Jacqueline Rae
