It's Not Just Me

BIBLICAL POINT OF REFERENCE:

"Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God."

~1 Peter 3:3-4

I've been thinking a lot recently about the beauty standard that society holds for women today. Girls have so much insecurity about their looks (in particular their weight), and we as a collective society just let it keep happening. I feel the pressure too; I am not the thinnest girl in the world, nor would I say I live up to the social norms of beauty. I doubt I'm the only girl who has ever admitted to wishing I had a different body or different hair or a different face or whatever; but we, as women and princesses of God, should not be wishing these things! Every time we feel not pretty or good enough is a time when we lie to ourselves and a time when we let everyone else lie to us. Let me ask you this: Don't you ever get tired of feeling insecure? Don't you ever get tired of telling yourself that you will never be as beautiful as the women on the magazine covers or in the movies? Because I am so sick and tired of telling myself that I need to improve my looks - for goodness sake, I am a freaking princess of Christ! And so are all of you! Everyone wants what they don't have, but what we do have is so much greater: God! And we are more than good enough for Him - we are His treasures and His masterpieces! We are His works of art! I know this probably sounds like I'm giving you a pep talk before a big performance or game or something, but I know it's not just me who is feeling these emotions and is having these struggles on a daily basis. I also know that if we, as a whole society, would just show everyone a little more love we could stop this self-hatred that is poisoning our minds. I know I want it to stop because I want to feel good about myself again, and I want every girl to feel the same way too. There's a really great song about showing the world more love: it's called "Just Me" by Sevenglory. I really love this song and I truly think the message is inspiring. I hope you take the time to listen to it, and I hope you all take the time to love yourselves today.
