The Happy Things in Between

BIBLICAL POINT OF REFERENCE:

"In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."

~Galatians 5:22-23

Have you ever been alone in your house or room and held a dance party? You know, it’s just you by your lonesome and you can suddenly do whatever you want. No one's there to say you look stupid or that you're weird, so you're able to just let loose and be yourself. It's a great feeling, and depending on the1 songs you're listening too, you may feel super empowered too.

Okay, I admit that this definitely happened to me this morning. And for today, at least, I was able to walk into my second day of classes with a positive attitude and a smile on my face.

That’s when I thought about this: Why aren’t we happier people? Why do we look down upon ourselves, upon other people, and upon the experiences we have? Even if we’ve had something bad happen to us or to someone we care about, that doesn’t mean it’s all bad all the time. In fact, life goes pretty well most of time. So what’s up, people?

To help this, some say we should focus on what makes us happy. But what I’ve found in doing this is that I typically only look for the big things in life that make me happy: my family, my friends, my boyfriend, traveling, my hopes and dreams, and of course, God. These are all good things to be happy about, but then we’re forgetting that there is more to life than the big things—there’s everything in between. Life on earth isn’t just the destination, it’s the journey, and along this journey we have small things that make us happy too. Stuff like a sunny day, a cozy sweater, hot coffee or tea in the morning, or even just having a dance party in your room by yourself. Imagine how much happier we would be, and how much more thankful we would be to God, if we focused not just on the big things that put us in a good mood, but on the small things as well!

So here’s my challenge for you all: Take the little things in. Life can be so fleeting, and when we don’t stop to admire the details around us that are truly gifts from God, we miss a chance to improve our spirits for the day.

And if you’re stuck in a place of unhappiness, find those little pieces of joy to hang on to. They’re given from God, and they’re meant to help you through the day.
